Anna-Vastra Daana Satra begins in Venginissery - 9

The 19th annual Anna-Vastra
Daana Satram was inaugurated in Narayanashrama
Tapovanam, Venginissery near here, by the
Mathadhipathi Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha.
This year the daana is expected
to serve 20000 families from the poor strata of
society.
This charitable activity which
began in a small way 18 years ago with daana for 150
poor families, has grown over the years to become a
prominent event attracting many philanthropic minds
both in India and Abroad.
A couple of Indian origin
living abroad – Lakshmi and Krishnan – entrusted
Swami Purushottama Tirtha of Vyasa Tapovanam in
Wadakkancheri, Thrissur with a corpus fund of Rs
14000, 18 years back and requested that the income
from the fund be used for feeding a few people from
the poor section of society every year.
In the early years cooked food
was given to the needy every year. This was later
changed to distribution of rice and cloth along with
some payasam.
Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha says
that a mere 3kgs of rice or a square meal on a
particular day will not serve to wipe away the poverty
of the recipients. But when many people participate in
such events of daana it becomes a satram and the
message of helping by gifting or sharing one’s
wealth with needy fellow human beings is better
conveyed and understood.
It is the well-wishers of the
Ashram who reach out to the indigent and downtrodden
to invite them to receive the daana and participate in
the Daana Satra. All are equally considered for this
without discriminating against Religion or caste.
The Satram inaugurated in
Venginissery, last evening with distribution of Rice,
Dress and Sweet to 3000 families will last about a
month with distribution taking place from different
village centers mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. This
year about 20000 families are expected to benefit from
the Satram at an estimated cost of Rs. 23 Lakhs.
The Anna Vastra Daana Satram is
being jointly conducted by Vyasa Tapovanam
Wadakkancheri and the Narayanashrama Tapovanam, in
Venginissery, Thrissur.
