What we mean by Maya

E-mail Print PDF

Question : Poojya Swamiji, During praying we used to say "amme mahamaye". Here what we mean by maya? As per Vedanta we should go beyond maya to get moksha. So are these two mayas the same?

Answer :

Dear and blessed R:

Harih Om Tat Sat.  Your email of 16th Sep is before me and I am reading it again.

Maya is the inscrutable power of the Lord or (a) Goddess.  The world itself is a display of this power. Our life, existence, being within this maya, all the prayers and wishes we make or have, come within it. To call God or even Maya makes no difference.  After that, what you pray for is what matters.

Is it to get something special within maya, a worldly or non-worldly gain, or to rise above maya, all temptations, and have God or Goddess alone in full? This is the only difference!

Calling God as Maya, you can also tell him “relieve me of your Maya”.

“O Mayavin, free me your maya.”

Love and ashirvaad.
